The General Motors Phantom is the creation of William L. Mitchell, one of the automobile industry's best know designers. He designed the 1938 Cadillac Sixty Special and put tail fins on the 1948 Cadillacs. Mitchell also designed the 1963 and 1968 Chevrolet Corvettes. He retired in 1977 as the director of General Motors Styling Division.
Mitchell's last project at GM was the Phantom. Unlike most experimental cars that flaunt new styling, the Phantom is simply a personal expression of Mitchell. "This is the kind of car I'd like to drive," Mitchell later stated.
As a prototype, this car is merely a fiberglass shell and therefore inoperable.
